What is ISEE Test?

The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is a standardized admission test. ISEE test is designed to evaluate the skills and knowledge of students between grades 2-12. ISEE testing helps determine students' readiness for admission to independent, private, and non-Catholic schools. Schools use the exam as a benchmark to help inform their admission decision and assess a student's potential for academic success.

Preparing for ISEE Test

To help your child prepare for the ISEE, it's important to understand the test format, content and level of difficulty. The exam is made up of four testing levels: Primary, Lower, Middle and Upper (see chart below). There are three levels for Primary and the test is given for students entering grades 2-4. The Lower level is for students entering grades 5-6. The Middle level is for those entering grades 7-8. The Upper level is given to students entering grades 9-12.

While test sections vary by testing levels, the test is made up of multiple-choice questions. The Primary levels are divided into: Reading Comprehension, Mathematics and an Auditory Comprehension section to assess listening comprehension. The Lower, Middle, and Upper levels are divided into the following sections:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Mathematics Achievement
  • Essay

ISEE Test Prep: How Long Should You Prepare?

Huntington recommends preparing your child for the test months in advance prior to their scheduled ISEE test dates. Put a test prep plan in place to help your child get the ISEE scores required for admission to their preferred private school. This plan may include tapping the expertise of test prep and ISEE tutors.

At Huntington, our certified tutors can help develop individualized ISEE test prep programs to help your child meet their target ISEE scores.

How Can Huntington's Test Prep Program Help?

To determine each student's academic strengths and weaknesses, we start the evaluation process with a preliminary test. For younger students entering grades 2-4, we administer a Huntington Academic Evaluation to help assess their academic skills.

For older students (grades 5-12), we administer a full-length ISEE practice test. Based on your child's test results, we design a fully customized ISEE prep plan. This plan will take into account your child's skill set areas that need special attention. Our ISEE tutoring programs incorporate important time management and organizational skill-building components.

Common Questions
About the ISEE

The Primary 2 Level exam takes 53 minutes. The Primary 3 Level exam takes 54 minutes. The Primary 4 Level exam takes 1 hour. The Lower Level exam takes 2 hours and 20 minutes. The Middle and Upper Level exams each take 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Each school chooses their own test date. ISEE test dates, locations, and registration information can be found by visiting http://erblearn.org/parents/admission/isee/registration.

ISEE test dates may vary but students may register to take the ISEE once per the following testing periods:

  • Fall (August – November)
  • Winter (December – March)
  • Spring/Summer (April – July)

No points are deducted for incorrect or omitted answers. Speed of completion does not affect scoring for any section. The raw score is simply the total number of correct answers.

Raw scores are converted into scaled scores to account for differences in test difficulty across administrations. The ISEE is scored on a scale from 760 to 940. Scaled scores are determined using tables produced by the test maker. Scaled scores are then compared to a 3-year rolling average of scores from students of the same grade level nationally.

Program percentiles compare individual students to peers of the same age and grade who have taken the ISEE.

  • ISEE scores between the 50th and 74th percentiles are considered "barely above average."
  • ISEE scores at or above the 75th percentile are "very strong."

A student who normally scores above the 50th percentile on other standardized tests may score below the 50th percentile on the ISEE. Students who typically score above the 90th percentile can end up with barely above-average ISEE results. This reflects the highly competitive applicant pool taking the ISEE.

ISEE essays are not scored. They are forwarded to designated schools for individual review by admissions committees. The essays provide insight into the students' writing abilities.

ISEE score reports are released to the schools, consultants, and organizations specified during registration. Scores remain valid for one academic year. Admissions requirements vary by school - contact your preferred schools directly for details.
