TEST PREP HELP
FOR THE TASC

Many individuals who did not have the opportunity to finish high school and obtain their high school diploma know that in order to set themselves up for a strong future, they must complete a high school equivalency test to gain admission to college or to be considered for employment by most employers. At Huntington Learning Center, we are proud to help those planning to take this important step in their lives prepare and perform well on their high school equivalency tests, which will undoubtedly open many doors.

Understanding the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC)

The TASC is a test that aims to measure adult skill levels in five subjects typically studied during high school, including Mathematics, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Science. Available in the United States, Canada, U.S. territories, and Canadian territories, the TASC is accepted by many colleges and employers as an equivalent to the high school diploma. Those taking the TASC have the option to take the test on the computer or in a paper and pencil format.

Huntington’s TASC test prep ensures that all individuals who enter our centers have a full understanding of what to expect come test day. We understand that for those who did not perform well in and complete high school, or for those who have been out of school for quite some time, the thought of taking a test can be nerve-wracking. Our TASC teachers will ensure you are prepared, feeling confident and ready to take the test.

Who is Eligible to take the TASC?

The TASC is designed for individuals who no longer have the opportunity to finish high school and receive their high school diploma. Those for whom the following apply are eligible to take the TASC:

  • Have not graduated from an accredited high school, or have not received an equivalency certificate
  • Are not currently enrolled in a regular high school
  • Are 16 years old or older and not enrolled in school
  • Reside in the state in which they will be taking the TASC (proof of residency is required at the time of registration)

Valid photo identification is required upon registration for the TASC, as well as on the day of the test. Non-U.S. citizens are eligible to take the TASC provided they meet all of the above requirements.

The TASC: What to Expect

The TASC is not an exam that tests memorized facts, details, or definitions, unlike many exams in high school courses. Instead, it takes into account the fact that most test-takers are adults with a wealth of life experiences. Questions are formatted to reflect practical and realistic settings that are relevant to adults' lives, measuring the understanding of broad concepts and generalizations. The exam is typically taken over the course of two or three days, and involves approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes of testing time. The TASC is accepted as a high school equivalency option in California, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, and many more states.

Common Questions
About the GED

TASC test questions require the understanding of broad concepts and generalizations rather than the ability to recall facts, details, or precise definitions. The TASC uses practical and realistic settings in test questions, which adults will recognize and are relevant to adults' lives.

The total TASC testing time is approximately 7 hours and 25 minutes. Individuals typically take the four test sections over two or three consecutive days.

TASC is currently an approved high school equivalency option in the following states:

  • California
  • Indiana
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • West Virginia

Test takers should check with their state's Department of Education regarding test center locations and registration options, including CTB's online registration system.

  • The overall passing score for the TASC is 2500. Each of the five content area tests requires a passing score of 500.
  • The passing score for the writing prompt is a minimum of 2 out of 8 points.
  • If a student fails any of the five content area tests, he or she may retake that test up to two more times at no cost. If a passing score is still not achieved by the third attempt, the student may retake the test for an additional fee.
